Sustainability at the Apex of Fashion

Fast fashion is a significant contributor to climate change. As global trends evolve rapidly, textile production has increased, contributing to 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and waste.

However, on May 1, 2023, good news emerged from the fashion industry during one of its biggest events, the "Met Gala 2023". The Met Gala is a major event that holds a significant influence in the fashion industry as it shapes and gives a huge impact to the ideas and even the mood of fashion which can reverberate for years to come.

Why is the "Vintage" theme used now?

This year, the 2023 Met Gala comes with a "Vintage" or "Archival Fashion" theme with a dress code "In honor of Karl". Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most prolific and celebrated fashion designers of all time who headed up some of the biggest fashion houses in the world, including Fendi, Chanel, and his own namesake label, all three of which he acted as creative director for until his death in 2019. Also, based on the theme, many stars have chosen to reuse existing dresses, making the 2023 Met Gala the most sustainable Met Gala ever.

The trend of "thrifting" has become a very popular and preferred habit among Gen Z, who are seen as the carriers of a sustainable future. The Met Gala 2023 is embracing vintage clothing as a way to encourage people to appreciate and reuse old clothes, especially given the recent shift towards more sustainable shopping and dressing habits.

The choice of the “Archival Fashion” theme for the 2023 Met Gala is very relevant to the current world condition where textile waste productivity is becoming a critical environmental issue. The 2023 Met Gala provides the world with a great opportunity to minimize textile waste and move towards a more sustainable future. Hopefully by promoting the use of vintage clothing at the 2023 Met Gala, the fashion industry can break away from old mired fashion practices and encourage people to value and appreciate old clothes, ultimately leading to greater awareness of environmental protection across generations.

Re-wearing dresses has proven to make stars look absolutely fabulous and still holds high values on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet.
